South Florida Motorcycle Accidents New Roundup: September 2019 Edition
On the surface, Florida seems like a great place to ride a motorcycle; the weather is almost always ideal for it, and the flat terrain is welcoming even to novice motorcycle riders. Riding a motorcycle can be very dangerous; the injuries you sustain in a minor motorcycle accident can be much more severe than what you would get in a car accident, simply because you don’t have the body of the car, the seat belts, or the airbags to protect you. It warrants mention, though, that wearing a motorcycle helmet is one of the biggest factors in preventing serious injuries in a motorcycle accident. Recent news reports serve as a reminder of how devastating motorcycle accidents can be. If you have suffered serious injuries as a result of a motorcycle accident, contact a South Florida motorcycle accident lawyer.
Motorcycle Accidents in and Around Palm Beach County
These are some motorcycle accidents that have recently made the news in South Florida.
- In June 2019, a motorcycle collided with a bicycle at the intersection of Military Trail and Golf Road in Palm Beach County. A woman was riding her bicycle across the crosswalk when Athouriste Elvens crashed into her on his motorcycle. Both people were thrown from their respective vehicles onto the road. They were transported to Delray Medical Center, where the woman who had been riding the bicycle later died. Elvens suffered serious injuries but survived.
- Also in June 2019, Brian Sessums was killed when his motorcycle collided with a Lexus at the intersection of Alternate A1A and Barrow Island Road in Jupiter. Sessums was pronounced dead shortly after the accident. The driver of the Lexus was not injured in the collision.
- In May 2019, Tony Terho of Palm Beach Gardens was riding his motorcycle on North Dixie Highway in Lake Worth with Marion Rover as his passenger. He ran a red light and collided with a 2006 Mitsubishi; both riders were thrown from the motorcycle. Terho died of his injuries ten days after the accident, but Rover suffered only minor injuries, as did the driver of the Mitsubishi.
The Legal Issues
Not every motorcycle accident is grounds for a personal injury lawsuit. The crash involving the bicycle certainly sounds like a case of negligence. The bicyclist was crossing at a crosswalk, and the motorcyclist must have known to look for her. Some news reports described the incident as a pedestrian accident since a bicycle is not a motor vehicle. In the case of Tony Terho’s accident, it sounds as though he bore some responsibility for the collision since he ran a red light. These accidents are reminders of the vulnerability of motorcyclists and the importance of following safety procedures when riding a motorcycle.
