Florida Crash Statistics [Infographic]
Florida is no stranger to accidents, and the numbers continue to climb yearly. With that in mind, our team at Smith, Ball, Báez & Prather is here to provide a brief overview of the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles crash statistics.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) dashboard show all crash data, ranging from 1/1/2022 to 12/15/2022. Crashes are broken down into multiple categories, including:
- Fatal crashes
- Motorcycle crashes
- Bicycle crashes
- Pedestrian crashes
- Injury crashes
- Hit-and-run crashes
- Impaired driving crashes (broken down into three sub-categories: alcohol only, alcohol & drugs, and drugs only)
366,076 motor vehicle accidents occurred throughout the reporting period, causing 3,146 fatalities and 232,943 injuries. Sadly, there were 2,932 total fatal crashes. During the year, car accidents spiked in March, totaling 36,503 crashes in 31 days.
Despite fewer total crashes in 2022 compared to 2021, the number of car crashes in Florida remains frighteningly high. While there have been various initiatives designed to curb the rate of car collisions and reduce the risk of fatalities, state records still maintain that an alarming number of car crashes occur annually.
Taking Precautions
As such, it’s essential to try and reduce the risk of accidents as much as possible. Avoiding distractions like talking on a phone or rushing is crucial when driving. Also, be sure to keep an eye out for the car in front of you and pay attention to oncoming vehicles coming from the sides or behind you.
Adhering to the recommended speed limit can also help you avoid car accidents. Following the speed limit ensures that you have time to react to changing traffic conditions, such as cars merging onto a highway or making sudden stops.
Though car accidents are undoubtedly harrowing experiences, we hope that by better understanding the statistics and realities of crashes in Florida and some proactive tips for reducing your risk on the roadways, you will be empowered to take steps to drive more safely.
